40S ribosomal protein S21 (RPS21) is a cytoplasmic protein that is a structural component of the 40S small ribosomal subunit in humans[1][2][4][7]. Ribosomes are essential organelles responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis and are composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, together containing RNA and about 80 distinct proteins. RPS21 belongs to the S21E family of ribosomal proteins and performs critical roles in protein translation as part of the ribosome structure. The gene encoding RPS21 is located on chromosome 20, with multiple pseudogenes found throughout the genome[1][2][6]. There is no evidence currently that RPS21 functions as a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. However, mutations or altered expression of ribosomal proteins, including RPS21, can be implicated in ribosomopathies like Diamond-Blackfan anemia and other disease processes[2].
