Overview

40S ribosomal protein S26 pseudogene (ENSG00000229032) is a genomic sequence on chromosome 1 that is similar to the functional RPS26 gene but is generally non-coding and non-functional. Pseudogenes like this one are generated by duplication or retrotransposition events and lack the regulatory elements or structure to produce a functional protein. They can be transcribed in some cases, and rarely, evidence suggests some pseudogenes might generate RNAs or peptides with regulatory roles, but the vast majority—including this one—have no established biological function or clinical significance. The functional version, RPS26, is a ribosomal protein associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia and is a component of the ribosomal small 40S subunit, but the pseudogene does not participate in these functions.
