40S ribosomal protein S8 (RPS8) is a structural component of the small (40S) subunit of the cytoplasmic ribosome, the macromolecular complex essential for catalytic protein synthesis in the cell[1][2][4][6]. RPS8 is a member of the S8E family of ribosomal proteins, localized in the cytoplasm, and is necessary for maintaining the integrity and function of ribosomes[1][2][4]. In human disease, RPS8 is overexpressed in certain cancers, including colorectal cancer and alcohol-associated hepatocellular carcinoma, which suggests a possible role as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker[1]. RPS8 also participates in regulatory networks, interacting with apoptosis modulators (such as CDK11p46) to influence translation and cell death pathways, but it itself is not a classic drug target and there are currently no known drugs that directly modulate its function[1].
