5-alpha Reductase Type II (5α-Reductase Type II)

Target
5α-Reductase Type II
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase
01

Overview

5-alpha reductase type II is an enzyme that catalyzes the irreversible conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent androgen, using NADPH as a cofactor. This reaction is crucial for male sexual differentiation and development, particularly in the formation of external genitalia before birth. It is encoded by the SRD5A2 gene.
