The 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1B (5-HT1B) is a G protein-coupled receptor that binds serotonin and is primarily located in the central nervous system and blood vessels. It acts as an inhibitory autoreceptor on serotonergic neurons and as a heteroreceptor on other neurons, modulating neurotransmitter release. Activation leads to vasoconstriction and inhibition of plasma extravasation. It is a target for triptans in migraine treatment and is implicated in mood disorders and addiction. Genetic variations in the HTR1B gene are associated with major depressive disorder, antidepressant response, and suicidal behavior.
Agonist at 5‑HT₁B receptors; vasoconstriction and inhibition of neurogenic inflammation (triptans). Indirect modulation of 5-HT1B receptor activity may contribute to antidepressant effects.
