5-Hydroxytryptamine Receptor 3

Molecular classification
Cys-loop ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

The 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 3 (5-HT₃ receptor) is a member of the serotonin receptor family, unique in being a ligand-gated ion channel rather than a G protein-coupled receptor. It mediates fast excitatory neurotransmission in both the central and peripheral nervous systems by allowing cation influx upon activation by serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine). It is therapeutically important as a target for antiemetic drugs used especially during chemotherapy/radiotherapy. There is ongoing research into their role in neurodevelopmental disorders and psychiatric conditions due to their regulatory effects on neural circuits.
