Other Names
arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein, ALOX5AP
Disease Roles
5-lipoxygenase activating protein Overview
5-lipoxygenase activating protein (FLAP) is an integral membrane protein essential for the biosynthesis of leukotrienes. It acts as a helper protein for the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), facilitating the transfer or presentation of arachidonic acid to 5-LO during leukotriene synthesis. Dysregulation or increased expression/activity of FLAP has been linked to inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibition of FLAP reduces leukotriene production by preventing the transfer or presentation of arachidonic acid to 5-lipoxygenase.
