50S Ribosomal Protein

Molecular classification
Ribosomal Protein
01

Overview

The 50S ribosomal protein is a component of the large (50S) subunit of the prokaryotic ribosome, which, together with the small (30S) subunit, forms the complete 70S ribosome in bacteria and archaea. The 50S subunit is primarily responsible for catalyzing peptide bond formation during protein synthesis and plays a central role in translation. It consists of ribosomal RNAs (23S and 5S rRNA) and over 30 distinct proteins. The bacterial/archaeal 50S subunit is targeted by several classes of antibiotics—including macrolides, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, and pleuromutilins—which inhibit its function by binding specific sites unique to prokaryotes.
