The 50S ribosomal protein refers to any of the proteins that are components of the 50S large subunit of the bacterial ribosome. The bacterial ribosome is a macromolecular complex responsible for protein synthesis. The 50S subunit is primarily made up of two ribosomal RNAs: 23S rRNA and 5S rRNA and about 31–34 distinct proteins. The peptidyl transferase center (PTC) catalyzes peptide bond formation during translation. Many antibiotics bind to specific sites on the 50S subunit to inhibit protein synthesis.
