50S ribosomal protein L2 is a highly conserved, essential component of the large (50S) subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. It is one of the primary rRNA-binding proteins and plays a central role in ribosome function, structure, and assembly. It is absolutely required for association between small (30S) and large (50S) subunits to form functional 70S ribosomes. Located at or near the peptidyl transferase center, it may play a role in peptide bond formation. It also strongly involved in tRNA binding at both A-site and P-site on the ribosome. L2 is highly conserved across all kingdoms—bacteria, archaea, eukarya—reflecting its fundamental importance to protein synthesis machinery throughout evolution.
