5S ribosomal RNA 1 (5S rRNA 1)

Target
5S rRNA 1
Molecular classification
Non-coding RNA, Ribosomal RNA (rRNA), Structural RNA, Component of ribosome
01

Overview

5S ribosomal RNA 1 is a highly conserved, approximately 120-nucleotide non-coding RNA molecule that is an integral component of the large subunit of cytoplasmic ribosomes in eukaryotes and prokaryotes, with the exception of animal and fungal mitochondrial ribosomes. It plays a critical architectural role within the central protuberance of the ribosome, physically bridging and coordinating communication among multiple functional centers necessary for protein synthesis. It interacts with ribosomal proteins and domains of large subunit rRNA to facilitate biogenesis, subunit assembly, and proper translation fidelity. While essential for ribosome structure and function, it is not itself a therapeutic drug target, nor is it a receptor, enzyme, or transporter.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable, as there are no drugs targeting 5S rRNA 1. Antibiotics affecting the ribosome may indirectly disturb 5S rRNA’s structural context, but they do not bind or modulate 5S rRNA directly.

03

Biological functions

Structural role in the large ribosomal subunit (central protuberance)Mediates communication between functional centers within the ribosomeFacilitates ribosome biogenesis and assemblyContributes to the fidelity and efficiency of protein synthesis (translation)Possible role in translational regulation and frameshifting
04

Disease associations

Other (no direct, specific diseases where 5S rRNA 1 itself is a therapeutic target)Mutations or rearrangements in 5S rDNA arrays may be linked to certain types of cancers or genome instability, but 5S rRNA itself is not a direct disease target. No validated role as a direct drug target in infection, inflammation, cancer, or other major disease areas.
05

Safety considerations

Not applicable; no drugs target this RNA, so there are no known therapeutic safety concerns.
06

Interacting drugs

None. There are no approved therapeutic drugs or small molecules that specifically target 5S rRNA 1.
