5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 100 (RNA5SP100) is a human genomic sequence classified as a processed pseudogene derived from the ancestral 5S ribosomal RNA gene. 5S rRNA is an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit and plays a structural and functional role in protein synthesis, but RNA5SP100 does not produce functional ribosomal RNA nor participate in ribosome assembly[1][3][4]. Pseudogenes are defined by accumulated mutations or lack of regulatory elements, which prevent transcription of functional products; processed rRNA pseudogenes often lack introns and are dispersed throughout the genome by retrotransposition[2][4].
