Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 122 (RNA5SP122) is a human processed pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. Processed pseudogenes arise through the reverse transcription of RNA and subsequent integration into the genome; they lack introns and canonical regulatory elements, and are generally not transcribed or translated into functional products[2][6]. The original 5S rRNA is an essential and highly conserved component of the large ribosomal subunit, critical for protein synthesis in all domains of life except for mitochondrial ribosomes in animals and fungi[3][1]. However, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP122 do not retain the functional roles of their parent genes. While some pseudogenes have been implicated in gene regulation or disease as regulatory RNAs or competitive endogenous RNAs in rare cases, there is no evidence that RNA5SP122 is involved in such processes[4]. It is not a therapeutic target, does not bind drugs, and has no known biomarker or safety relevance.

Biological functions

Usually none (pseudogenes do not encode functional products)Possible minor regulatory roles via RNA mechanisms (rare, context-specific)
03

Disease associations

None established for this specific pseudogene; generally, pseudogene expression can sometimes reflect or affect disease states through regulatory mechanisms, but no direct role for this specific pseudogene is documented
