Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 124 is one of many processed pseudogenes derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. The canonical 5S ribosomal RNA is a highly conserved structural RNA of approximately 120 nucleotides, involved as a component of the large ribosomal subunit and essential for protein synthesis[1][3][5]. In contrast, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP124 are non-functional genetic elements that result from the retrotransposition or duplication of functional 5S rRNA genes but have acquired mutations preventing their normal function in ribosome assembly or protein synthesis[2][4]. Most pseudogenes are transcriptionally silent, but subsets can be transcribed and may act in the regulation of their parent gene's expression, often through antisense mechanisms or regulation of chromatin structure, though these roles remain gene- and context-dependent and are primarily described in a few select cases, not for this specific pseudogene[2]. There is no evidence in biomedical literature that RNA5SP124 serves as a therapeutic drug target, encodes a protein, or is used clinically as a biomarker.
