Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 131 (RNA5SP131) is a genomic DNA sequence derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene that has accumulated disabling mutations and lost its original function, becoming a pseudogene[2][6]. 5S rRNA itself is a highly conserved structural and functional RNA found in the large ribosomal subunit and is essential for ribosome structure and function[1][3][5]. However, RNA5SP131 is classified as a processed rRNA pseudogene, meaning it is a nonfunctional duplicate sequence generated by retrotransposition or gene duplication events and does not encode a functional RNA or protein product[2][4][6]. Most pseudogenes, including RNA5SP131, are not transcribed or translated, do not participate in known biological processes, and are not recognized as drug targets or biomarkers. There are rare exceptions where certain pseudogene transcripts can exert regulatory effects, but these functions are gene- and context-specific and have not been described for RNA5SP131[4][6].
