5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 21 (RNA5SP21) is a non-coding RNA gene classified as a *pseudogene*; it corresponds to a non-functional copy of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. The 5S rRNA gene encodes a component of the ribosomal large subunit essential for protein synthesis in the cell, but pseudogenes like RNA5SP21 do not produce functional ribosomal RNA[3][8]. Generally, rRNA pseudogenes are processed or duplicated gene copies that have lost the ability to encode functional RNA, often due to accumulated mutations[8]. While most pseudogenes are non-functional, some can regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally through mechanisms such as competing endogenous RNA or production of siRNA, though there is no evidence for functional activity of RNA5SP21 specifically[2][5][6].
