5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 227 (RNA5SP227) is a **processed pseudogene** derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene family. Processed pseudogenes lack the ability to encode functional RNA or protein products due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements. By definition, pseudogenes are non-functional DNA sequences that are homologous to active genes and often arise from genomic duplication or retrotransposition events. RNA5SP227 does not contribute functional rRNA to the ribosome and has no known role in cellular physiology, disease, or therapeutic targeting. As a processed pseudogene, it is recognized by its sequence similarity to 5S rRNA but is considered biologically inactive and is not targeted by therapeutics.
