5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 231 (RNA5SP231) is a processed pseudogene originating from ancestral 5S ribosomal RNA sequences and is classified as a non-coding element in the human genome[1][2]. Processed pseudogenes result from retrotransposition events and generally lack regulatory or coding capacity[2]. 5S ribosomal RNA itself is an essential structural component of the ribosome's large subunit, participating in ribosome assembly and function, but pseudogenes like RNA5SP231 do not produce functional RNA or protein[3][5]. While pseudogene expression is being investigated as a molecular biomarker in cancer and other diseases, there is no evidence that RNA5SP231 has a direct biological or therapeutic role[4].
