5S ribosomal pseudogene 235 is a non-coding RNA locus annotated due to sequence similarity with functional 5S rRNA genes. 5S rRNA is highly conserved and essential for ribosome assembly and protein synthesis. However, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP235 arise from duplication, mutation, or retrotransposition, resulting in loss of function. rRNA pseudogenes may be transcribed but typically do not produce functional rRNA incorporated into ribosomes. While some pseudogenes can regulate gene expression or act as competing endogenous RNA in specific contexts, RNA5SP235 lacks evidence of any functional or disease role. It is not considered a therapeutic target, nor does it have established biomarkers, mechanisms of drug action, or safety concerns.
