5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 237 is a genomically encoded, non-functional copy of the 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, classified as a processed or duplicated pseudogene[4]. 5S rRNA genes encode a 120 nucleotide non-coding RNA essential for ribosome structure and function; however, RNA5SP237 does not produce a functional 5S rRNA transcript and does not contribute to ribosome assembly[1][3][4]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP237 typically arise from duplication or retrotransposition events followed by loss of coding or regulatory function, and many have no cellular function[4]. In large-scale transcriptome studies, pseudogene expression profiles, including some 5S rRNA pseudogenes, have been linked to cancer subtype classification and prognosis, though there is no evidence specifically implicating RNA5SP237 as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease gene on its own[2].
