5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 242 (RNA5SP242) is a non-functional, non-coding pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. 5S rRNA, the functional ancestor, is a structural RNA that forms part of the large subunit of ribosomes and is essential for protein synthesis in most organisms[3][1][5]. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP242 are considered "genomic fossils" produced primarily via retrotransposition (processed pseudogenes) or by duplication events followed by disabling mutations. These elements do not encode functional products and lack regulatory sequences required for normal transcription, although in rare instances, pseudogenes in general have been shown to have roles in gene regulation or cancer biology; however, there is no evidence for such function in RNA5SP242 specifically[2][4][6].
