5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 248 (RNA5SP248) is a non-coding, non-functional genomic sequence derived from 5S ribosomal RNA. Pseudogenes of rRNA may arise via gene duplication or retrotransposition followed by sequence degradation, resulting in a region that resembles the parent gene but has lost its ability to encode the functional ribosomal RNA[2][6]. Unlike canonical 5S rRNA, which is a crucial structural RNA for ribosome function, the pseudogene does not participate in ribosome assembly, translation, or any known cellular process. There is no evidence for RNA5SP248 being transcribed at biologically relevant levels, nor influencing gene networks or disease in the manner described for some other transcribed pseudogenes[2][4]. This molecule is a genomic artifact and not a therapeutic or molecular target.
