Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 251 (RNA5SP251) is a pseudogene—an inactive, non-functional fragment or copy—derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family[2][5]. While canonical 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA) is an essential structural RNA component of the large ribosomal subunit, the pseudogene version lacks the ability to encode a functional RNA product and is generally considered non-functional. It has no known biological activity, ligand, or role as a drug target. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP251 are abundant in the genome and may participate in evolutionary or regulatory processes, but specific functional or pathological relevance for RNA5SP251 has not been documented. Some studies have shown that expression levels of certain pseudogenes, in aggregate, can serve as markers in cancer, but no such evidence is available for this particular pseudogene[4].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable

03

Biological functions

None (no known functional role; pseudogenes are typically non-functional copies of genes)[2][5]Some pseudogenes can have regulatory functions as competing endogenous RNAs or lncRNAs, but specific data for RNA5SP251 is not available[4]
04

Disease associations

Some pseudogene expression profiles have been linked to cancer molecular subtypes and prognosis, but there is no evidence specifically implicating RNA5SP251 in disease[4]Other

Interacting drugs

None known
07

Biomarkers

None known specifically for RNA5SP251Note: Expression of other pseudogenes is emerging as a possible biomarker in cancer, but direct evidence for RNA5SP251 is lacking[4]
