Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 256 (RNA5SP256) is a non-coding RNA pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family, classified among rRNA pseudogenes[2]. 5S rRNA is an essential structural and functional component of the large ribosomal subunit in all life domains, but pseudogenes such as RNA5SP256 arise through mutations or retrotransposition and are typically non-functional in ribosome assembly or protein synthesis[1][2]. While some rRNA pseudogenes are expressed as transcribed RNA, often at low levels, their functional significance remains unclear. In some cases, pseudogenes may regulate gene expression through mechanisms such as miRNA sponging or lncRNA-like regulatory functions[4]. There is no evidence that RNA5SP256 acts as a therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs, mechanisms of action, biomarkers, or safety concerns directly associated with this pseudogene. This entity should not be considered a canonical drug target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or similar molecular therapeutic target. If the intention was to reference a functional ribosomal RNA or a molecular target, this entry is not appropriate.
