RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 284 (RNA5SP284) is a processed pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene family. The 5S rRNA is an essential component of the large subunit of eukaryotic ribosomes and involved in protein synthesis, but pseudogenes such as RNA5SP284 are mutated gene copies that typically do not produce functional RNA. These pseudogenes originate by retrotransposition and lack normal transcriptional activity, regulatory elements, and/or coding capacity[2][4]. While some pseudogenes can be transcribed and occasionally exert regulatory roles, most—including rRNA pseudogenes—are presumed biologically inert and are not considered molecular targets for drugs or therapeutic intervention. If pseudogene loci are expressed, they may participate in competitive endogenous RNA networks, but there is no evidence of such a function for RNA5SP284 specifically[2]. Key point: RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 284 is a non-functional genomic copy of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene and is not a receptor, enzyme, or any classic drug target.
