RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 288 is a transcribed or annotated *pseudogene* of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional gene sequences resembling known genes but with mutations, deletions, or truncations that prevent normal expression. 5S rRNA is a small RNA molecule (about 120 nucleotides) crucial for ribosome function and protein synthesis in cells[1][3][5]. The “288” numbering indicates its position in the annotated set of 5S rRNA pseudogenes in the human or other eukaryotic genomes, not a unique molecular function. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP288 typically do not encode functional RNA or protein, nor do they act as classical receptors, enzymes, or drug targets[4][6]. There is no evidence that RNA5SP288 is a biomarker or has roles in disease, nor does it interact with drugs.
