Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 289 (RNA5SP289) is a processed pseudogene derived from a retrotransposed copy of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. Unlike functional 5S rRNA—which is an approximately 120 nucleotide RNA molecule and a vital structural component of the large ribosomal subunit in all domains of life[1][3]—processed pseudogenes like RNA5SP289 are typically non-functional. They lack the introns and regulatory elements of their parental gene, often contain disabling mutations, and are not actively transcribed into functional RNA molecules[2][4]. Pseudogenes can occasionally play regulatory roles by acting as competitive endogenous RNAs or through other RNA-mediated mechanisms, but there is no direct evidential support that RNA5SP289 itself plays such a role. No drugs target this pseudogene, and it does not serve as a therapeutic or diagnostic target. Such pseudogenes are abundant in the genome and sometimes used to investigate the evolutionary history of gene families, but they are generally regarded as biologically inactive relics[2][4].

No direct biological function (product of retrotransposition, not functional)May potentially play a regulatory role in gene expression networks in some contexts (as experimentally observed for some pseudogenes)
04

Disease associations

Other (expression levels of some pseudogenes can correlate with disease states, including cancer, but no direct evidence for this specific pseudogene)
