5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 319 (RNA5SP319) is a genomic DNA segment classified as a **pseudogene** of the 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA) gene family[4]. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional DNA sequences that resemble corresponding functional genes, but due to sequence changes or lack of key regulatory elements, do not encode functional RNA or protein products[4]. The canonical 5S rRNA is an essential small non-coding RNA that is a component of the ribosomal large subunit involved in protein synthesis[1][3][5]. However, pseudogene copies like RNA5SP319 are not transcribed into functional 5S rRNA, nor do they form part of the ribosome. While most pseudogenes are biologically inactive, a minority have been shown in other contexts to regulate gene expression or act as competing endogenous RNAs, sometimes impacting disease through RNA-based mechanisms in cancer[2][6]. There is currently no evidence that RNA5SP319 has any direct or unique biological function, disease role, or pharmacological relevance.
