"RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 325" (RNA5SP325) is a non-coding pseudogene that is homologous to the gene encoding 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA), a 120-nucleotide structural RNA found in the large subunit of the ribosome. Unlike canonical 5S rRNA genes, which are essential for ribosome assembly and function, this pseudogene does not produce a functional RNA and is not known to be transcribed or to possess any critical biological activity. As a pseudogene, it is considered a vestigial genetic element, typically resulting from gene duplication or retrotransposition and lacking protein-coding or functional RNA potential. There is no evidence that RNA5SP325 is a therapeutic target, biomarker, or involved in disease mechanisms. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP325 are common in rRNA gene clusters due to their high copy number and repetitive nature in eukaryotic genomes. Unlike some transcribed pseudogenes (e.g., RPSAP52), there is no reported evidence that RNA5SP325 or similar 5S rRNA pseudogenes are functional, associated with disease, or considered therapeutic targets.
