Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 332 (RNA5SP332) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome that shares homology with functional 5S ribosomal RNA genes but is not transcribed into a functional ribosomal RNA[4]. 5S rRNA itself is a universally conserved ~120 nucleotide component of the ribosome, essential for ribosome structure and protein synthesis in all cellular life except animal and fungal mitochondria[1][3]. However, RNA5SP332 is categorized as a processed pseudogene—meaning it arose via reverse transcription and genomic integration of an RNA template, lacking the necessary regulatory elements and/or sequence integrity to be transcribed and function as mature rRNA[2][4]. Most of these rRNA pseudogenes are inactive in terms of cellular function. There are no known therapeutic drugs, disease associations, or biomarker roles for RNA5SP332, and it should not be considered a druggable or mechanistically relevant biological target.

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

No known direct biological functions for the pseudogene itself; pseudogenes can have regulatory RNA roles (such as acting as miRNA sponges or antisense regulators in some cases) but this is not described for RNA5SP332.
04

Disease associations

None specific; while some pseudogenes are implicated in diseases like cancer via regulatory mechanisms, there is no evidence for a role for RNA5SP332.
