5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 343 (RNA5SP343) is a non-functional sequence in the human genome related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. It belongs to the class of processed rRNA pseudogenes, which are segments of DNA that resemble functional ribosomal RNA genes but are generally noncoding due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP343 are often the result of reverse transcription and genomic reinsertion of RNA transcripts. While pseudogenes typically do not encode functional RNA or proteins, large-scale analyses show that some pseudogenes may be transcribed and their expression can correlate with disease states, such as cancer; however, there is no evidence that RNA5SP343 has such roles[2][4][5].
