Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 39 (RNA5SP39) is a processed pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. It does not produce a functional ribosomal RNA product and is classified as a non-coding RNA pseudogene.[2][3] Pseudogenes, including rRNA pseudogenes like RNA5SP39, generally arise from ancestral ribosomal RNA genes through processes such as retrotransposition or sequence duplication followed by inactivation due to mutation.[1][3] Most pseudogenes are transcriptionally inactive, but some can be expressed and may have regulatory functions in gene expression via RNA interference mechanisms or by acting as competitive endogenous RNAs; however, these roles are not universally established and no specific functional data is available for RNA5SP39 itself.[1][4][5] rRNA pseudogenes are a large and diverse family, typically bearing sequence similarity to their functional parental rRNA genes but lacking protein-coding potential and canonical rRNA roles.[8] There is no evidence that RNA5SP39 acts as a disease gene, therapeutic target, or direct clinical biomarker.

Biological functions

Putative gene regulation (via RNA interference or serving as competitive endogenous RNA, as reported for some pseudogenes)Other (pseudogene functions are primarily regulatory, if any; typically do not encode functional products)
03

Disease associations

Other (no direct evidence for this specific pseudogene in disease, but pseudogene expression can be associated with cancer and other pathologies in some contexts)
04

Biomarkers

Other (pseudogene expression signatures, in aggregate, have been used as biomarkers in cancer studies, but no direct biomarker role for RNA5SP39 is established)
