5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 422" (RNA5SP422) is a processed pseudogene of the 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA) gene. The canonical 5S rRNA is a 120-nucleotide structural RNA crucial for large ribosomal subunit assembly and function, but pseudogenes like RNA5SP422 arise through retrotransposition or duplication and are generally non-functional owing to inactivating mutations or lack of regulatory elements[2][3][6]. While canonical 5S rRNA is indispensable for protein synthesis in all domains of life[1][3], the pseudogene RNA5SP422 does not encode a functional RNA and is not considered a therapeutic target. Some pseudogenes have been shown to exert regulatory effects (e.g., acting as miRNA decoys or antisense RNAs[2][4]), but there is currently no evidence that RNA5SP422 has such functions or clinical relevance.
