5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 438 (RNA5SP438) is a non-functional, non-coding RNA gene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. It belongs to the family of processed or unprocessed pseudogenes present in the human genome. While functional 5S rRNA is an essential structural and regulatory component of the large ribosomal subunit[1][3], RNA5SP438 contains sequence alterations that render it incapable of producing a functional RNA product and it does not participate in ribosome biogenesis or protein synthesis[5]. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP438 may be transcribed, and the expression patterns of pseudogenes have gained recent interest as possible regulatory RNAs or prognostic markers in cancer[4][6]; however, there is currently no specific functional role or druggability attributed to RNA5SP438.
