5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 466 is a processed pseudogene of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. 5S rRNA is a highly conserved component of the large (60S) ribosomal subunit important for ribosome assembly and function in all domains of life, but this pseudogene form does not produce a functional 5S rRNA molecule[1][3][4]. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP466 are generated by gene duplication or retrotransposition and accumulate mutations that render them non-functional; they are present in the genome but typically not expressed or contributing to ribosomal or cellular function[2][4]. In some cases, pseudogenes can act as regulators at the RNA level, but there is no evidence for such a function for RNA5SP466. - 5S rRNA itself participates in ribosome structure and function, interacting with ribosomal proteins and rRNAs, but pseudogenes like RNA5SP466 are considered genomic remnants without therapeutic relevance[1][3]. - rRNA pseudogenes are often cataloged in gene databases but typically excluded from gene functional analyses[4].
