Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 486 (RNA5SP486) is a processed pseudogene of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Like other rRNA pseudogenes, it arose via retrotransposition and generally lacks introns and protein-coding potential[2][4]. Unlike functional 5S rRNA—which plays a central structural and communication role in the ribosome’s large subunit, transmitting allosteric signals between functional centers and stabilizing ribosomal assembly[1][3][5]—the RNA5SP486 pseudogene does not encode a functional RNA molecule and is not incorporated into ribosomes. While some pseudogenes can regulate gene expression by RNA-mediated mechanisms (e.g., acting as RNA decoys for RNA-binding proteins), there is no evidence that RNA5SP486 has such a role[2]. It is not regarded as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or safety concern. The inclusion of the term “486” simply denotes its place among annotated pseudogenes of the 5S rRNA family; it does not signify any unique biological or clinical relevance for this specific locus.

02

Mechanism of action

None (no known mechanism as target; parental rRNA participates in translation, not drug targets)

03

Biological functions

None (pseudogenes generally lack biological function; parental gene—5S rRNA—is part of ribosomal function, but the pseudogene does not retain this activity)
04

Disease associations

Potential regulatory role in gene expression (based on some pseudogenes) but specific role for RNA5SP486 not documented
