5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 488 (RNA5SP488) is a processed pseudogene derived from 5S ribosomal RNA genes[1][2][6]. It is classified among the ribosomal RNA pseudogenes, which are non-functional copies of ribosomal RNA genes that have become inactive due to mutations and genetic rearrangements[4][6]. This pseudogene does not code for a protein and is not incorporated into functioning ribosomes. While the canonical 5S ribosomal RNA is an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit, participating in ribosome architecture and function, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP488 do not contribute to ribosomal activity[3][5][7].
