Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 488 (RNA5SP488) is a processed pseudogene derived from 5S ribosomal RNA genes[1][2][6]. It is classified among the ribosomal RNA pseudogenes, which are non-functional copies of ribosomal RNA genes that have become inactive due to mutations and genetic rearrangements[4][6]. This pseudogene does not code for a protein and is not incorporated into functioning ribosomes. While the canonical 5S ribosomal RNA is an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit, participating in ribosome architecture and function, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP488 do not contribute to ribosomal activity[3][5][7]. Most pseudogenes, including this one, are thought to be transcriptionally inactive, though a minority may exert regulatory effects through RNA-mediated mechanisms in rare cases[4][8]. There is no literature supporting RNA5SP488 as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or therapeutic target. In summary: RNA5SP488 is a non-functional ribosomal RNA pseudogene, not a therapeutic target, and not relevant for drug development or clinical biomarker use. Its inclusion as a "target" appears to be a mistaken assignment.

Biological functions

Other (pseudogenes typically lack known functions; occasionally, pseudogenes can play regulatory roles at the RNA level, but there is no specific evidence that RNA5SP488 has such a role)
03

Disease associations

Other (expression of some pseudogenes can correlate with disease state, particularly in cancer, but no specific evidence relates RNA5SP488 to a particular disease)
