5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 50 (RNA5SP50) is a processed pseudogene belonging to the family of ribosomal RNA pseudogenes in the human genome. Unlike its functional counterpart, 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA), which participates as an essential structural and functional component of the ribosome, this pseudogene does not encode a functional RNA product and is generally considered transcriptionally inactive[6]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP50 may arise via duplication or retrotransposition mechanisms but typically lack regulatory elements and sequence integrity required for normal gene function[6]. There is no evidence that RNA5SP50 functions in ribosomal assembly, cellular pathways, or disease mechanisms, nor is it a drug target or recognized biomarker. The presence of 5S rRNA pseudogenes is a result of genome evolution, and while some pseudogenes elsewhere have been shown to play regulatory roles or correlate with certain cancer subtypes due to their RNA expression, there is no evidence that RNA5SP50 holds such roles[4].
