Target intelligence / Profile preview
5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 517 (RNA5SP517) is a processed pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. Pseudogenes are genetic sequences that resemble functional genes but have accumulated mutations or other alterations that prevent them from encoding functional products[4][5]. This pseudogene does not produce functional RNAs or proteins and is not involved in standard ribosomal function, unlike the authentic 5S rRNA, which forms a key structural component of the large subunit of the ribosome[1][3]. Processed pseudogenes such as RNA5SP517 typically lack promoters, may carry a poly-A tail, and are generally considered non-coding[4]. While 5S rRNA plays a critical role in the ribosome’s structural integrity and function, its pseudogenes do not participate in ribosome activity and are not direct therapeutic targets[5].
