5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 52 (RNA5SP52)

Target
RNA5SP52
Molecular classification
Other (pseudogene), Noncoding RNA

Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogenes, like RNA5SP52, are genomic DNA sequences derived from the 5S rRNA gene that have lost their ability to encode a functional RNA or contribute to the structure or biogenesis of ribosomes. Unlike the canonical 5S rRNA, which is essential for the large ribosomal subunit and for accurate protein translation, pseudogenes are generally transcriptionally silent or produce non-functional noncoding RNAs. However, some 5S rRNA pseudogenes can be transcribed, and emerging research suggests a subset may have regulatory roles in processes such as immune response—although there is no evidence RNA5SP52 itself has any specific function or clinical relevance. There is no evidence of RNA5SP52 being a therapeutic target or relevant biomarker, nor is there evidence of disease association or drug interaction. It is not to be confused with RPSAP52, which is a distinct, transcribed pseudogene with documented roles in cancer.

Mechanism of action

None established

03

Biological functions

None established for RNA5SP52 specifically; annotated 5S rRNA pseudogenes generally do not produce functional RNA.Parental 5S rRNA: structural component of cytoplasmic ribosome.

Disease associations

No direct disease association for RNA5SP52RNA5SP family members (as a group) have been implicated in modulating interferon response and immune regulation through transcripts, but not specifically for RNA5SP52.The distinct Oncofetal pseudogene RPSAP52 (not RNA5SP52) has been implicated in cancer, but this is a different gene.
