Overview

5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 65 (RNA5SP65) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome that shares high sequence similarity with the functional 5S ribosomal RNA gene but lacks coding capability due to mutations, deletions, or insertions which prevent it from participating in ribosome assembly or function[6][4]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP65 arise via genome duplication or retrotransposition events and are typically transcriptionally silent, though in some rare contexts they may be transcribed. Unlike functional 5S rRNA (an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit), this pseudogene does not contribute to ribosome structure or protein synthesis. There is no evidence that RNA5SP65 serves as a biomarker, therapeutic target, or has direct disease relevance. If transcribed, rRNA pseudogenes can sometimes act as regulatory non-coding RNAs (e.g., miRNA sponges or small interfering RNA sources), but this has not been described for RNA5SP65[4]. In summary, RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 65 is a non-functional, non-coding RNA pseudogene representing a molecular fossil of the gene family encoding 5S ribosomal RNA[6][4]. It is not considered a valid molecular or therapeutic target.
