5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 78 (RNA5SP78) is a non-coding genomic element in the human genome classified as a **processed rRNA pseudogene**. It is similar in sequence to 5S ribosomal RNA genes, which are essential components of the large subunit of the ribosome and crucial for ribosome structure and function[1][3][5]. However, as a *pseudogene*, RNA5SP78 does not produce a functional RNA and generally lacks protein-coding or catalytic function[4]. Most rRNA pseudogenes result from the duplication or retrotransposition of functional rRNA genes but accumulate mutations that render them inactive. While some pseudogenes can have regulatory roles in gene expression or be involved in disease as biomarkers, there is no evidence linking RNA5SP78 itself to such roles. RNA5SP78 is not considered a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or established therapeutic target.
