Target intelligence / Profile preview
5S ribosomal RNA pseudogene 96 (RNA5SP96) is a pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene, and does not encode a functional RNA or protein product as part of the ribosome[2]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP96 are considered "noncoding elements" of the genome: they are historically viewed as genomic fossils, but recent research suggests some pseudogenes are transcribed and can participate in regulatory pathways by generating small interfering RNAs or acting as molecular decoys for microRNAs[2][6]. However, most 5S rRNA pseudogenes, including RNA5SP96, have no established functional or therapeutic relevance, and there are no known drugs or targeted therapeutics associated with these molecules. As such, it is not considered a target in the sense used for drug discovery or therapeutic intervention. Note: - RNA5SP96 is not the same as canonical 5S rRNA, which is an essential ribosomal RNA involved in protein synthesis and ribosome structure[1][5]. - The majority of pseudogenes like RNA5SP96 are not actively translated into functionally relevant peptides and are not considered "druggable" or meaningful for therapeutic targeting[2][6]. - "Pseudogene" status implies that the entry may be incorrect if submitted as a conventional target for therapeutic research.
