Overview

Shogaol (specifically [6]-shogaol) is a pungent, bioactive phenolic compound present in ginger, formed primarily when ginger is dried or cooked. It is structurally related to gingerol but has higher potency for several biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines. Shogaol exerts its effects through modulation of signaling pathways such as MAPK and antioxidant response, but it is not itself a molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme. Instead, it is classified as a natural product or phytochemical and is not a canonical druggable target for therapeutic intervention[4][1][2][7].

Mechanism of action

Induces phosphorylation of MAPKs (ERK, JNK, p38); Upregulates Nrf2/HO-1 pathway (antioxidant response); Inhibits reactive oxygen species generation (in vitro in neutrophils)
