Overview

60S ribosomal protein L18a is a structural protein component of the large (60S) subunit of eukaryotic ribosomes[1][2][3][5]. It is encoded by the RPL18A gene and is essential for the assembly and function of the ribosome, which catalyzes protein synthesis within the cell. It belongs to the L18AE family and is specific to cytoplasmic ribosomes. RPL18A may bind RNA during ribosome assembly and has been noted to interact with hepatitis C virus RNA, with potential involvement in viral replication[3]. There are multiple pseudogenes of RPL18A dispersed throughout the genome, and its gene is co-transcribed with U68 snoRNA[1][3]. As with other ribosomal proteins, regulatory mutations or differential expression can be detected in certain pathological states, but it is not typically considered a drug target or clinical biomarker.
