Overview

The 60S ribosomal protein L34 pseudogene comprises non-coding DNA related by sequence to the ribosomal protein L34 (RPL34), a component of the large 60S subunit of the eukaryotic ribosome. These pseudogenes are processed DNA segments that do not encode functional protein and are dispersed throughout the genome. Pseudogenes are a common feature of ribosomal protein families and result from gene duplication and retrotransposition; they are not transcribed into functional protein and have no known biological or disease roles. The 60S ribosomal protein L34 pseudogene (ENSG00000224988) should not be confused with the canonical ribosomal protein L34 (RPL34; ENSG00000109475), which is a structural ribosomal protein, not a pseudogene, and does have cellular function in protein synthesis. The pseudogene is not functionally active, not a druggable target, and not clinically relevant for the purposes typically associated with therapeutic targets.
