Overview

60S ribosomal protein L36a (RPL36A) is a structural protein component of the large (60S) subunit of cytoplasmic ribosomes, which are responsible for the synthesis of proteins in eukaryotic cells[1][3][5]. RPL36A belongs to the L44E (L36AE) family and is highly conserved; it is distinct from but shares similarity with the ribosomal protein L36a-like (RPL36AL)[1][3][5]. RPL36A is essential for the assembly and structural integrity of the ribosome and participates in ribosomal RNA binding[3][5]. Overexpression of RPL36A has been associated with increased cell proliferation and has been observed in hepatocellular carcinoma, suggesting a possible role in tumor growth regulation and cancer biology[1][6]. There are no current drugs specifically targeting RPL36A, and it is not generally classified as a direct therapeutic target, but its expression levels may provide disease biomarker utility, especially in cancer[1][6].
