Overview
7-Ketocholesterol is a major oxysterol formed through the autoxidation of cholesterol. It accumulates in oxidized LDL, atherosclerotic plaques, and various tissues during aging or disease states. It exhibits pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory effects, disrupts membrane integrity, and inhibits key enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism. Elevated levels are implicated in several pathologies, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and ocular diseases.
