Bacterial Ribosome (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Ribonucleoprotein, RNA-protein complex
01

Overview

The bacterial ribosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for protein synthesis in prokaryotic cells. It consists of two subunits, the 30S and 50S, which assemble to form the functional 70S ribosome. The ribosome reads mRNA and uses tRNAs to sequentially add amino acids to a growing polypeptide chain. Many antibiotics target bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death. Understanding the structure and function of bacterial ribosomes is crucial for developing new antibiotics and combating antibiotic resistance.
