SHAO (8-((2-hydroxybenzoyl)amino)octanoate), also known as salcaprozic acid or salcaprozate sodium (when in salt form), is an amphiphilic molecule used as a drug delivery enhancer. It improves the solubility and membrane permeability of co-administered drugs, facilitating their absorption and distribution. It is notably used in oral formulations to enhance the bioavailability of poorly absorbed macromolecules like peptides and proteins, and in intratumoral cancer therapies to improve local drug distribution while reducing systemic toxicity.
SHAO enhances both aqueous and lipid solubility of co-administered drugs, facilitating passive transmembrane cell penetration. It forms supramolecular complexes with active pharmaceutical ingredients, improving delivery into target cells/tissues.
